Douglas Spratt, MBA., M.Sc., P.Eng., LEEDTM Accredited Professional, Fellow Engineer of Canada

Doug is a principal of the firm with thirty years of experience as a mechanical and energy engineer. He worked within the Energy Management Division at the University of Alberta Physical Plant back in the 1980's. It was there that he developed his Masters Thesis on the Dynamic Control of HVAC Systems. This work involved the development of energy management software to dynamically control a building's thermal systems to optimize energy use. His software was implemented at the University's Administration Building where savings from his energy strategies were documented and presented at an international conference by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers.
Doug also worked as a consultant for Alberta's Ministry of Education, auditing schools across Alberta. While in Alberta, he provided engineering services to commercial, industrial and institutional building clients under his company, Spratt Consulting Services.
Doug has continued his consulting engineering work since moving back to BC 15 years ago. He has provided engineering services for building owners, managers and architects. Project scope has ranged from small mechanical engineering studies to managing multidiscipline engineering projects up to $70 million. Mechanical system designs have included ground source heat pumps, under-floor air, radiant floor, multizone, variable volume, water loop heat pumps, district heating systems, and roof-top equipment.
Doug's primary areas of expertise include HVAC upgrade design, energy studies and indoor air quality improvements. Doug has published technical papers both locally and internationally, and has been retained for expert witness work. He is also particularly adept at leading projects, using his leadership, enthusiasm and management skills.
Doug also has a strong financial understanding of business, with an Executive MBA degree from SFU. He has worked with clients in developing financial plans relating to energy and HVAC systems.
Stephen Kooiman, M.A.Sc., B.Eng.

Stephen has a bachelor of mechanical engineering from the McMaster University where he focussed on thermal and fluid dynamics. He subsequently obtained his Masters of Applied Science at McMaster, investigating the effects that urban wind has on the performance of wind turbines. His research work was presented at a number of technical conferences and was incorporated into controller development of wind turbines while working as a wind energy specialist. Stephen was also awarded a number of prestigious academic awards including the NSERC Canadian Graduate Scholarship and the RIM Ontario Graduate Scholarship. Stephen has two years of mechanical engineering experience and has been working for Douglas Spratt & Associates since 2010 in the area of mechanical design and field services.
